Living with someone is a test. I don't mean parents or roommates--those are different. They come with the knowledge that there's always an exit. You can always move on when things hit bottom. In fact, that's the goal of those relationships. With a lover, it's the opposite; the goal is to not leave when things hit bottom. Anyone can stick when things are swell.

Dobbs and I were good that way. We thrived on the tumultuos. Yes, the streets are dark with more than night.º We often clawed at each other, but we also thanked our lucky stars for human contact married to sincere emotion.
